One of my favorite approaches to style and design is taking something formal and combining it with something more casual, more bohemian. I usually love to do this with my clothes. Taking a dark pencil skirt and pairing it with a textile heavy woven top. Pairing costume jewelry with a minimalist shirt dress, or mixing a button down pinstripe shirt with jacquard pattern pants. Taking two unlikely styles and mixing them together, allows me to feel put together but also myself and that's what I wanted to do with my jewelry.
The original choker I used as the template for this piece was a gold plated choker. When I wore it , it was too formal and too glamorous for an everyday office look or casual get together with friends. I wanted to soften it up a bit but keep that feeling of being put together.
So what did I do, I used fabrics of course. It brought a softer eclectic touch without sacrificing how regal a choker can look.
Using fabrics with different textures, materials, colors, and prints that complemented each other, made the choker more accessible. Sure, I know chokers are not for everyone, but I bet you took a double take and realized, I never would have thought to pair fabric like that with a choker like that? That's all it takes, mixing two unlikely things to result in something beautiful and inspiring.
So if you need some inspiration, try my bohemian formality approach for a change. Take something formal and mix it with something offbeat, artistic, or unlikely and you will be surprised what you will come up with.
